Hello SOTGC community,
This is the second part in my saga: “Why I’m Passionate About Treating The Person, NOT the Disease.”
I love to understand. “Why?” is one of my favorite questions. My analytical mind enjoys the process. Exploring possibilities to explain that which I am unable to explain is what led me to integrating more holistic-based principles into my practice. Not everything or everyone fits into a box. Being out of the box is not a bad thing. In fact, it’s an opportunity to get creative, and to explore possibilities.
Discovering the field of integrative medicine occurred in complete synchronicity. One weekend, I attended a nutritional medicine conference with the renowned Andrew Weil, M.D., as a way to expand my knowledge base and treatment approaches. There, I heard about his Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine fellowship program. I was willing to explore, as a student of life and as a doctor committed to understanding.
Being open to receiving the unknown was probably my most important process. I turned around, and there was Dr. Weil. We chatted, and, inspired, I decided to apply to the program. Not only was I accepted, but I was awarded a full scholarship.
My fellowship experience was transformative. I gained tremendous hope that I could incorporate my gifts into my medical career. I was introduced to evidence-based modalities and other whole medical systems supportive to allopathic medicine. The program directors, professors, guest speakers, and Dr. Weil himself collectively created an environment where I could personally experience the healing process. I discovered what I really love and enjoy in life, not only as a doctor but also as a complete individual.
What I love about medicine now is the experience of learning about myself and about human nature. I focus more on healing, and not just treating. Treating the patient is about targeting the body and eliminating symptoms, which is only one facet of the healing process. I am most excited about whole-person healing, which is about honoring the individual process and getting at the root cause of dis-ease and suffering.
Emotions, stress, triggers, and inflammation all manifest differently and uniquely impact each person’s health spectrum. AmoraMED Institute provides a place of inspiration and empowerment, allowing individuals to discover their innate healing wisdom with which to achieve optimal health. It’s personalized medicine.
Amora is another word for the mulberry tree, which possesses the wisdom to know when the last day of frost has passed for the season. It then knows to fruit, coming shortly into full bloom using its innate directional guidance. Similarly, within each of us exists a personal guidance system. Attuning ourselves to this inner guidance opens us up to a new way to approach our journey of healing.
These days, to satiate my curious nature, I continue asking “Why?”. And I always remember to go inward as part of the discovery process. Honoring my inner wisdom, I remain quiet. I listen. And I wait to hear the answer.
Join me on the next time for Part 3 of this saga. In the meantime, if you’re interested in learning more about this holistic approach then please visit: www.amoramed.com
